This session will address the topic of automating container standards and compliance for highly regulated situations (i.e., PCI, FISMA or HIPAA compliant systems) leveraging containers and the new NIST Open Security Controls Assessment Language (OSCAL) standards.

Highly-regulated industries like governments have their own set of complex and challenging regulatory IT requirements that must be constantly maintained. For this reason, the introduction of new technology can sometimes be difficult. Container solutions provide government with both a secure platform on which containers are the foundation for building compliant applications and a workflow for operational governance at scale.

The problem remains however that even with the technology innovation of containers, cloud and other new tools, the area of IT compliance has been relatively unchanged with security standards that lag far behind, creating mismatches of traditional controls to modern systems. Secure application workflows, technology and infrastructure-agnosticism (both XML and JSON based), flexible container solutions coupled with new standards coming from NIST successfully address these compliance and security concerns in a way that is highly automated moving forward with specifications in design with security and agility in mind.
