Desktop Virtualization

Session Overview
Developed and offered by the NYS Forum's IT Greening Work Group

Organizations face both cost and complexity in managing and maintaining the PC environment for end users. The industry has offered centralized management systems to streamline management and maintenance of the PC environment and this session looks to the value and benefits of virtualizing the desktop, including from the green perspective. Benefits to be discussed range from simplified desktop management, longer lifecycles and decreased power consumption.

Ken Young, Dyntek and Mike Margevicius, Gartner Group will discuss the desktop virtualization marketplace, cost items to consider, technological necessities to make the virtualized environment perform well, advantages and disadvantages of virutalizing, as well as security concerns.

Rajiv Rao from NYS Department of Tax and Finance, Jeff Deal, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, and Duane Averill of the Division of Housing and Community Renewal will provide participants with the experience each of these agencies has obtained from the desktop virtualization projects currently underway or recently completed.

The presenters will complete the session with a panel discussion, further exploring the issues, value and results that each agency has experienced by virtualizing desktops
