Website Redesign: Recent Lessons from the Field

Debi Orton of GOER and Susan Powell and Jen Strand of Tax and Finance will share their experiences in redesigning their agency websites If you're planning to redesign, or more importantly, if you haven't redesigned in many years, this is a must see session. Even if you have recently redesigned, come to share your experiences and add to the discussion. There's really something here for everyone - on a very important topic. Summaries below.

Debi Orton, NYS Governor's Office of Employee Relations ( Within the past thirteen months, the Governor's Office of Employee Relations has completed two major and one minor web site redesigns. All three projects were completed in-house, and featured:

  • Complete redesign of organizational structure;
  • Usability/accessibility planning from the outset;
  • Modular code for headers, footers, navigation, etc. (all previous coding had been done by hand); and for one of our sites,
  • "Design by Committee".

Debi will prepare a brief slide show with the highlights of each project, and then do a tour of the sites, leaving plenty of room for discussion and questions. She will also discuss what precipitated these changes, how to balance ongoing work with major new projects without additional resources, and lessons learned.

Susan Powell and Jen Strand, NYS Department of Taxation and Finance ( The New York State Tax Department recently redesigned its web site using in-house resources and usability consultants. This presentation will address:

  • the organizational and technical context in which the project was delivered
  • the project plan and time frame
  • key success factors and challenges
