Presentation Overview

Continuing our theme of looking across the board at best practices for web development and design (last fall's presentations addressed Design Studio, Writing for the Web, Test-Driven Development, and Web Security), our April meeting moves us on to another critical component in this spectrum.

While we may typically think of Code Review in regard to large-scale, enterprise-level Java applications, for instance, it is equally valid for web site and web application projects, regardless of size. This presentation will focus on the guiding principles and application of good Code Review practice in a project. Topics covered, as applied to website and web application development and design, will include:

  • Finding bugs early, when they are still relatively inexpensive to fix.
  • Coding standards compliance. Code review helps to maintain consistent coding style across the agency.
  • Teaching and sharing knowledge. During review, team members gain a better understanding of the code base and learn from each other.
  • Consistent design and implementation. Peer review helps to maintain a level of consistency in software design and implementation.
  • Higher software security. Applications that require a high level of security benefit from targeted security reviews.
  • Team cohesion. Review discussions save team members from isolation and bring them closer to each other.
  • Confidence of stakeholders. You build confidence of stakeholders regarding the technical quality of the execution.
