ITS Data Center Consolidation

The NYS Forum Project Management held a May 21, 2015 event at the Holiday Inn titled "ITS Data Center Consolidation". To a crowd (in person and on web) of roughly 100 members, Chris Keating, Project Manager 2, NYS office of Information Technology Services, lead a Project Spotlight session discussing experiences and involvement with the ITS Data Center Consolidation Project.

Mr. Keating has been working the in the technology industry since 1992. He joined IBM in 1996 and became a project manager there in 2004. Since then he has managed various types of technology projects in many industries. He began working on data center migration and consolidation projects in 2010 and joined The New York State Office of Information Technology Services in 2013 as the Project Manager for the state''s Data Center Consolidation effort. His presentation featured the background of New York''s state of the art data center spaces on the campus of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute project. He spoke about the experiences encountered throughout the implementation of the project including the goals that were set out and Project Management challenges that were faced. He provided real life examples about how he accomplished each task and milestone throughout the extensive process of consolidating. He also provided the audience with a visual look inside the new data center spaces.

Throughout the presentation, attendees were encouraged to be active and ask questions or provide their own comments/experiences. The audience took advantage of the opportunity and provided a lot of great talking points that contributed to how valuable the event was. Overall, the presentation by Chris Keating and the audience participation resulted in an invigorating and captivating exchange of information and ideas providing much food for thought and plans for action.
