NYC Facilities Explorer - Interactive Planning Tool

The May 2nd "Culture of Innovation" in NYC Government Series event featured a team from the New York City Department of City Planning who presented and showcased their successful use of open source technology for a "build versus buy" project model. The event spotlighted their project, "NYC Facilities Explorer - Interactive Planning Tool"

The NYC GIS and Innovation & Emerging Technologies Workgroups hosted the event to a crowd of roughly 80 members at the NYC Department of Transportation in downtown Manhattan. Presenters included: Hannah Kates, Product Manager, NYC Department of City Planning, Chris Whong, Civic Technologist, NYC Department of City Planning, and Daniel Fuchs, Director of Capital Planning, NYC Department of City Planning.

Topics included data set and mapping platform enhancements, open source project management tools, experience with the user-centered project approach, the technologies utilized for building the Explorer platform, City Open Data use and interagency collaboration.

Following the presentation, there was an active and dynamic Q&A/Open Discussion session where the audience joined in to discuss the efforts in implementing this technology to the city. The event was extremely constructive and turned into an invigorating and captivating exchange of information and ideas providing much food for thought and plans for action
